Injured at Work in Ontario? You Can Choose Your Physio Clinic
You got hurt at work. Maybe your back went out lifting something, maybe you hit your head, maybe you're still shaky from the whole thing. Someone at work hands you a form, mentions a clinic they "usually send people to," and you assume that's just where you have to go.
It isn't. In Ontario, the choice of who treats you belongs to you, not your employer, and not your supervisor's go-to clinic.
Who actually chooses your physiotherapy clinic after a work injury?
You do. Ontario workers have the right to make the initial choice of health professional for a WSIB claim, and physiotherapists are one of the options. Your employer can suggest a clinic, but they can't require you to go there.
On top of that, you don't need a doctor's referral to start. Physiotherapists have direct patient care access for work-related injuries, meaning you can book directly with a WSIB-registered physiotherapist the same way you'd book any other appointment.
That matters more than it sounds like it should. Waiting on a family doctor appointment just to get a referral can burn through days or weeks you don't need to lose.
What does registering a WSIB claim actually look like from your side?
It's less complicated than most people expect. In practical terms:
- Report the injury to your employer as soon as possible.
- You have six months from the date of injury to file your claim with WSIB.
- You can book your first physiotherapy appointment right away — you don't have to wait for the claim to be approved.
- For single-area injuries (a low back, a shoulder, a neck), the clinic can start what's called "block one" of care while your claim is still pending.
Most soft tissue work injuries move through an eight-week program of care, split into two four-week blocks. Your clinic handles the paperwork with WSIB on the back end — your job is just to show up and do the work.
Why starting physiotherapy early actually changes your recovery
This isn't just a convenience point — it's a clinical one. Research on physical therapy after concussion found that beginning personalized, symptom-guided treatment early is safe, even in the first week after injury, and that people who started physiotherapy early reported less dizziness and recovered sooner than those who waited.
The old advice to "just rest until it feels better" has shifted. Guidelines from the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation now emphasize early education, reassurance, and a gradual, paced return to activity — because prolonged rest can actually feed into activity avoidance and slow things down rather than speed them up.
For concussion specifically, this is one of the best-supported findings in the field right now: early, graded exercise tends to outperform a wait-and-see approach. If a work injury involved a bump or blow to the head, it's worth asking about this directly rather than assuming it will resolve on its own — our team walks through exactly what that looks like in What Concussion Physiotherapy Looks Like, Visit by Visit.
The same early-movement principle applies broadly to soft tissue and back injuries too. If you're dealing with a strained back from a lifting incident, The Modern Approach to Lower Back Pain covers how current evidence favours staying active over bed rest.
Does WSIB physiotherapy cost anything out of pocket?
No. The clinic bills WSIB directly for all approved treatment. There's no co-pay, no deductible, and nothing out of pocket for approved care — WSIB funds it directly, and you never see an invoice.
This is the same direct-billing relationship our Burlington clinic maintains with extended health plans more broadly, so whether you're coming in through a WSIB claim or a regular benefits plan, the process at the front desk is designed to stay out of your way.
What if you've already started with a different clinic?
Switching clinics after treatment has begun isn't off the table, but it does need WSIB approval first. If you're considering a change, call WSIB before you book elsewhere so your benefits aren't affected in the meantime. It's a quick call, and it protects your claim.

Starting your assessment in Burlington
If you've been hurt at work, you don't need to wait on a referral or settle for whichever clinic was suggested to you. An initial assessment at OMNI Health and Rehab in Burlington looks at the injury itself, how it's affecting your daily function and work tasks, and lays out a plan for what the first block of care will involve — with WSIB billed directly so there's nothing for you to pay upfront.
You can book that first appointment directly, no referral required, at /book.
