Workplace Injury Recovery
How WSIB Physiotherapy Works in Burlington: Step by Step
You got hurt at work. Maybe it was a lifting injury, a fall, or something that's been building for months and finally gave out. Now, on top of the pain, there's a pile of forms, unfamiliar acronyms, and a nagging worry about whether you can afford to get better.
If that's where you're at, you're not alone, and you don't have to figure it out by yourself. Here's what the WSIB physiotherapy process actually looks like, from the day of the injury to the day your claim closes.
What is WSIB-funded physiotherapy?
WSIB (the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) is Ontario's no-fault insurance system for workplace injuries. If you're hurt on the job, you're generally entitled to medical and rehabilitation benefits — including physiotherapy — along with lost earnings replacement and return-to-work support, regardless of fault.
In practice, that means an approved WSIB claim can cover your physiotherapy sessions directly, with the clinic billing WSIB rather than you paying out of pocket for treatment.
What should you do right after you're hurt at work?
- Tell your employer about the injury as soon as possible, even if it seems minor at first.
- Get medical attention right away — a doctor, walk-in clinic, or emergency room if needed.
- Complete Form 6, which describes how the injury happened and the symptoms you're experiencing. This is what WSIB uses to open your claim.
- Your employer must also report the injury to WSIB within three days if it led to medical attention, lost time, or modified duties.
This part often feels like the most overwhelming stage, mostly because of the paperwork. The good news is that none of it needs to happen in isolation — a physiotherapy clinic experienced with WSIB claims can walk you through it.
Do you need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist for a WSIB claim?
No. In Ontario, you can go directly to a physiotherapist for a work injury without a doctor's referral. The physiotherapist can assess you and help initiate the claims process from there, which saves a step for a lot of injured workers.
You also have the right to choose which clinic treats you. Your employer or WSIB case manager can't dictate where you go for care — a point covered in more detail in Injured at Work in Ontario? You Can Choose Your Physio Clinic.
What happens at your first physiotherapy assessment?
At your first visit, the physiotherapist asks about how the injury happened, what's limiting you day to day, and what your job physically demands. They'll do a hands-on assessment of movement, strength, and function related to the injury.
From there, the physiotherapist completes a Form 8 (Health Professional's Report) and submits it to WSIB. This form documents your functional limitations and gives WSIB an expected recovery timeline — it's the medical evidence behind your claim.
How does your claim get approved and treatment start?
Once your employer and WSIB review the claim, it's assigned a claim number if accepted. After that, treatment is authorized and physiotherapy can begin — typically with an initial block of 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the injury.
What does WSIB physiotherapy treatment actually involve?
Treatment is built around your specific injury and job demands — not a generic exercise sheet. For a shoulder or back injury, that might mean graded strengthening, manual therapy, and a plan to return to specific tasks. For a concussion sustained at work, active rehabilitation targeting balance, eye-head coordination, and gradual exertion tends to be part of the approach, as outlined in What Concussion Physiotherapy Looks Like, Visit by Visit.
Across injury types, earlier intervention tends to help. Starting physiotherapy sooner rather than later can shorten recovery time and reduce the chance of an acute injury turning into a longer-term, chronic issue — which benefits both you and your employer.
What does this feel like for you, day to day?
Realistically, the biggest relief most injured workers describe isn't a specific exercise — it's not having to manage the paperwork alone. A clinic experienced with WSIB claims handles the forms, files the treatment plan, and communicates directly with your claims representative, so your energy goes toward recovery and getting back to your job, not chasing fax numbers.
